 2023 Preview 


       North Sand Mountain completed the 2022 season with a 4-7 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 2A region seven, the Bison earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. North Sand Mountain's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Lexington by a score of 49-14.

       Since 2010, North Sand Mountain has gone a combined 88-59. Their 59.9% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 2A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, North Sand Mountain has managed to compile a record of 122-146. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 31st in Class 2A and 227th in the AHSAA.




       The Bison are led by head coach Keith Kirby who is entering his eighth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 50-31 over the past seven seasons at North Sand Mountain. Under his direction the Bison have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times. They have won one region crown with Coach Kirby.

       Coach Kirby returns his starting quarterback from last season and several key players along the line of scrimmage. He will be leaning on his experienced senior class as the season opens. The Bison have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 62-40 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 2A and 11th in the AHSAA.

       The Bison could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region seven this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. They have managed to qualify for the playoffs every year since 2014 and hopes are high to extend that streak.

       The Bison open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Valley Head on Friday, August 25 at Tiger Stadium. Last year the Valley Head Tigers finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in first place in Class 1A region seven. The Tigers lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Marion County by a score of 27-6.

       North Sand Mountain and Valley Head have met a total of 19 times on the football field. The Bison have a 8-11-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2022 with Valley Head winning by a score of 45-33.
